Beck Anderson: Use Somebody Excerpt Reveal

use_somebody_excerpt

Excerpt

We stand in a ridiculous line (my opinion) to grab a coffee at the original Starbucks, and Macy pulls out her phone.

“Now we’ll take our coffees and go drink them somewhere cool.” She pulls me along back the way we came, hops on the Link again, headed back toward the hotel.

“Where is this cool place?” I fight the urge to take the reins. She’s lost. We’re headed nowhere.

“Just wait. It’s gonna be cool. I asked the concierge about it before you got up, too, so it’s not just me and Google that thinks so.”

We walk a short block in the opposite direction of the hotel, past the gleaming steel and glass public library, which Macy takes several pictures of as we walk.

We cross the street, and she walks up to the front doors of a grey stone modern office building.

“What?” I feel a little unsettled. I’m the one who does the surprising.

“Trust me.” She takes my hand and pulls me in through the revolving doors.

We get on the elevator, and she presses the button for the seventh floor.

“Okay.” I stand next to her, but I’m concentrating mostly on the way it feels to have her hand on mine. I think about her lips on mine, her hips against mine…

And then she coughs. It’s two, quick coughs, but there’s that rattle again.

And my mind’s back on the business of keeping her well, keeping her safe.

We get off the elevator. She looks like a kid with a great secret. “Just wait. This is so cool.”

“You haven’t been here, how do you know?”

“Don’t be a crank. Nobody likes the stick in the mud.”

“Fine.”

She pulls me through another set of chrome and glass doors.

And yeah, she’s right. It’s pretty cool.

So apparently Macy from Teton County, Idaho, has discovered the rooftop park hidden in the middle of downtown Seattle. And it’s gorgeous. She hands me my coffee and walks over to the railing. The sun is out, and the water and the waterfront is laid out in front of us.

“There’s the Space Needle! We’re going there later today. After dinner.”

I laugh. “Are you at least going to let me pick a spot for dinner?”

“Do you want to?” She doesn’t look like she wants me to.

“There’s a great place I know, and it’s a short walk from the hotel.”

“Fine.” She takes a sip from her coffee and looks out over the view.

I kiss her on the cheek again. “Don’t sulk.”

She turns and kisses me full-on, on the lips, for the briefest possible moment, before pulling away and facing out to the view again. “I’m not.” I taste mint and feel sparks down to the base of my spine.

Then she smiles the slyest, crookedest grin I’ve seen. I haven’t seen her smile like that.

And I grin back.

31344120Jeremy King, Hollywood über-agent to the stars, knows that sharks gotta swim. He’s one of them, after all. He’s never met a deal he couldn’t strike or an argument he couldn’t win. LA is his kind of town—they both never stop moving.

So when his friend and client, movie star Andrew Pettigrew, invites him on a “man-cation” to the wilds of Idaho for a little fly-fishing, Jeremy’s not so sure. He might not have cell service. There’s no way there’ll be any supermodels to woo. And his idea of the great outdoors is a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway in his Tesla Model S—moose definitely do not factor into the picture.

Fitting then that because of a moose, he meets Macy Shea Summerlin, the best fly-fishing guide on the South Fork. Jeremy’s surprised and tantalized, but Macy isn’t having any of his alpha male posturing. She gives as good as she gets, and she knows how to throw a mean right hook.

As the two of them get tangled up in each other’s lives, both Jeremy and Macy must come to terms with winning and losing and letting love in. And Jeremy has to find the answer to his own question: Is he simply “using” Macy or could he really “use” someone like her? Find out in Use Somebody, book 3 of the Fix You series.

BLURB

 2015 was a turbulent time…

As the world anxiously watched, Scotland voted for political freedom from England.

With the vote, frumpy Amelia MacRory became Scotland’s only hope. As the last direct descendant of Mary Queen of Scots, fire ran in Amelia’s blood. Only she could defend the rights of the people. After being kidnapped from her American home in the dead of night—and almost killed in the process—she was forced to become Queen of Scotland. And as a killer closes in, the Royal Scottish Guards must step in and protect her — whether she likes it or not.

Can she survive a world of intrigue, subterfuge, and assassins that have been designed to bring down the newly independent country? Or will she lose it all—including the man she loves…?

 EXCERPT

A glint in the trees off to the left of her house proved his worst fears realized… They were not the only ones hunting Amelia. They had to move quickly.

“Shooter in the woods! Go! Go! Go!”

Jacob swung his door open and took off towards the assassin. He had to get there first. They could not let the shooter make it to the house. It would throw their plan into chaos. The future would be lost.

Jacob stealthily ran across the road. The shooter would know that they were there soon. Will and Darren were not far behind him. The shooter was moving towards the house. However; something caught his eye. Bringing him to a momentary halt. There was another glint in a tree…

Two shooters!

He turned slightly and motioned Will to the house. His brother would see to the woman. He and Darren would take care of the shooters.

Holding the gun in front of him he aimed towards the shooter in the tree. A light came on in the upstairs of the house. The shooter was aiming towards the bedroom. Towards the woman, Amelia.

Jacob fired.

A Thank You Letter

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I love getting together with family and sharing a meal without the stress of gift giving.  Not to mention, pumpkin pie! Yum!

This year I have a lot to be thankful for besides my family and friends. This is the year my dream came true. I published my first book, Saving Evangeline. And it ended up on the shelf at my local Barnes and Noble, The Summit in Birmingham, AL.11143216_1638247409749835_8072242315156521528_n

I’m thankful to Victoria Lea of the Aponte Literary Agency for being there with me on this roller coaster ride. She’s held my hand and fought for me when needed. I’m thankful to Omnific Publishing for taking a chance on an unknown author.

I’m  lucky to have Jill Odom as a critique partner. She knows when to push, what to correct, and how to take my dark humor. And she doesn’t spank me too hard when I overuse prepositional phrases.

I’m fortunate to belong to amazing RWA chapters (Southern Magic, Heart of Dixie and Georgia Romance Writers.) I learn something from every conference and meeting I attend. True friendships have been formed through these organizations. They provide more than continuing education, and I urge all aspiring romance writers to join.

Most of all I’m grateful to my family and friends for their love and support. They’ve seen (and endured) the black moments of despair and cheered the successes. The devoted hubby never complains about the time I spend at the computer. He takes care of me and always has. My daughter is not only my pride and joy, she’s my number one fan girl and cheerleader. I’m a lucky mom.

I am truly blessed by the friendships I’ve made through social media. Too many authors and bloggers to name have guided me though this crazy, sometimes overwhelming journey. Words will never be adequate to express my gratitude to them.

Last, but by no means least, my readers…I am still amazed by the outpouring of love and support you have shown me. Thank you for taking a chance on my story and for all the reviews. You humble me. You’ll never know how many times you’ve picked me up when I was low. Especially my Cain Raisers. You are quite simply the best street team ever. I love all of you.

Project Purse Dump– My friend, Linda Joyce

ProjectPurseDump-BannerI’m excited to welcome my friend, Linda Joyce, to Project Purse Dump. Linda  is an award-winning contemporary romance author and her Louisiana family’s roots run deep and intertwine with her Japanese heritage. Her vagabond childhood afforded her a variety of travel opportunities. Now she lives in Atlanta, Georgia with her husband and fur babies. Take it away, Linda!

Nov 13 - Headshot - Linda JoyceHello. My name is Linda Joyce, and I’m a purse junkie. I have purses in different shapes and sizes. Purses made of different materials. If there’s a support group for purse junkies like me, one that provides inside tips about the best sales, then sign me up. But don’t think for a minute that I have any intention of kicking this habit.

I do want to clarify. While I am a purse junkie, I’m not a purse snob. I offer you a view of my Jam Bag as supporting evidence. It’s colorful. Has style. Notice the silver grommets and the black handles. And shows off my signature sign—Fleur de Lis. It’s ecofriendly, made from recycled bottles.

So what do I jam in my jam bag? Nov 13 - Purse Photo - Linda Joyce

1) Japanese key chain with my key fob, reward cards, and red change purse carrying three, dollar coins inside.

2) Hairbrush – this is insurance. I carry it so I’ll never need it.

3) Turquoise wallet housing credit cards, stamps, miniature diploma from the University of Florida, and a few single dollar bills. It’s also big enough to hold my phone inside when I need to Grab-n-Go.

4) Leather case hiding an imported German fountain pen.

5) Pen—one of the first I got for SWAG

6) Lipstick – PÜR Moonlit Pearl

7) Business cards- name, address, rank, and no serial number.

8) Hand wipes from the casino in Biloxi. I came home $60 in the good and put it in the bank.

9) Kleenex

10) Mints – SWAG I carry around. Never know when I might meet a new reader.

11) Notebook—covert operations recorded to be used as secondary characters in a story.

12) Bookmarks for Her Heart’s Desire. On the flip side, the books in the Fleur de Lis series.

Project Purse Dump– Author Kristi Rose

ProjectPurseDump-BannerI am excited to join Project Purse Dump!

Let’s see what author Kristi Rose has in her beautiful purse! I’m totally jealous of it.

–Nancee

***************************

Oct 30 - IMG_3754 - Kristi RoseHey y’all. It’s my turn to share what I lug around in my giant purse. I don’t always carry such a monstrosity but after I had kids the size of my purse grew exponentially and has stayed that way :-).

First, I have to share that I scored such a good deal on this purse, like 80% off, and my daughter found the matching wallet which cost me $10. So wow- that never happens to me. I’ve never even had a purse and wallet that match so I feel like a girl who is definitely wearing her big girl panties.

Ok, let’s get to it. Starting at the top and going clockwise this is what you’re looking at.

Oct 30 - IMG_3755 - Kristi Rose

  1. Giant pink folder is my passion planner. I know. I know. We have smart phones but it’s just not the same as writing down everything in the moment. My passion planner tells me what to do and when to do it. For all things work, child and writing.

Sometimes, I swap this out for my laptop. I never carry both or my purse would weight 10 pounds.

  1. Slim black case is my stun gun. Yep, I carry a stun gun. Sometimes two. And I’m not afraid to use it. Veronica Mars is my idol.
  1. Brown case with rubber band is a wallet of sorts. I’m a couponer and this keeps me organized for that. I once bought a year’s worth of toiletries including razors for $34.28. No lie.
  1. Matching wallet! Holla!
  1. Gum- never leave home without out it. Yes, I chew it obnoxiously. Sorry.
  1. Pens and pencils.
  1. Chick-fil-a card to get a discount. Cuz I eats there a lot 🙂 (she says with an accent)
  1. My author postcards and business cards but the truth is I’m always nervous about handing them out.
  1. Packet of tea and honey sticks. I probably drink 4-5 cups of tea a day. Hot and cold.

CENTER MASS

  1. Ear buds
  1. Lipstick. I usually carry more but my purse tipped in my car so the rest are rolling around on the passenger seat floorboard. I only grabbed up my favorites.
  1. Motrin, hand sanitizer, and lotion that smells like yummy cake.

That’s it. That’s me in a nut shell. Oh, Yes, I carry feminine products. I see here that I have forgot to reload on those. Whoops.

Thanks Tracey and Jessica for letting me be a part of this. I love having this insiders look at everyone’s purse:-).
