Beck Anderson: Use Somebody Excerpt Reveal

We stand in a ridiculous line (my opinion) to grab a coffee at the original Starbucks, and Macy pulls out her phone.

“Now we’ll take our coffees and go drink them somewhere cool.” She pulls me along back the way we came, hops on the Link again, headed back toward the hotel.

“Where is this cool place?” I fight the urge to take the reins. She’s lost. We’re headed nowhere.

“Just wait. It’s gonna be cool. I asked the concierge about it before you got up, too, so it’s not just me and Google that thinks so.”

We walk a short block in the opposite direction of the hotel, past the gleaming steel and glass public library, which Macy takes several pictures of as we walk.

We cross the street, and she walks up to the front doors of a grey stone modern office building.

“What?” I feel a little unsettled. I’m the one who does the surprising.

“Trust me.” She takes my hand and pulls me in through the revolving doors.

We get on the elevator, and she presses the button for the seventh floor.

“Okay.” I stand next to her, but I’m concentrating mostly on the way it feels to have her hand on mine. I think about her lips on mine, her hips against mine…

And then she coughs. It’s two, quick coughs, but there’s that rattle again.

And my mind’s back on the business of keeping her well, keeping her safe.

We get off the elevator. She looks like a kid with a great secret. “Just wait. This is so cool.”

“You haven’t been here, how do you know?”

“Don’t be a crank. Nobody likes the stick in the mud.”

She pulls me through another set of chrome and glass doors.

And yeah, she’s right. It’s pretty cool.

So apparently Macy from Teton County, Idaho, has discovered the rooftop park hidden in the middle of downtown Seattle. And it’s gorgeous. She hands me my coffee and walks over to the railing. The sun is out, and the water and the waterfront is laid out in front of us.

“There’s the Space Needle! We’re going there later today. After dinner.”

I laugh. “Are you at least going to let me pick a spot for dinner?”

“Do you want to?” She doesn’t look like she wants me to.

“There’s a great place I know, and it’s a short walk from the hotel.”

“Fine.” She takes a sip from her coffee and looks out over the view.

I kiss her on the cheek again. “Don’t sulk.”

She turns and kisses me full-on, on the lips, for the briefest possible moment, before pulling away and facing out to the view again. “I’m not.” I taste mint and feel sparks down to the base of my spine.

Then she smiles the slyest, crookedest grin I’ve seen. I haven’t seen her smile like that.

And I grin back.

31344120Jeremy King, Hollywood über-agent to the stars, knows that sharks gotta swim. He’s one of them, after all. He’s never met a deal he couldn’t strike or an argument he couldn’t win. LA is his kind of town—they both never stop moving.

So when his friend and client, movie star Andrew Pettigrew, invites him on a “man-cation” to the wilds of Idaho for a little fly-fishing, Jeremy’s not so sure. He might not have cell service. There’s no way there’ll be any supermodels to woo. And his idea of the great outdoors is a drive down the Pacific Coast Highway in his Tesla Model S—moose definitely do not factor into the picture.

Fitting then that because of a moose, he meets Macy Shea Summerlin, the best fly-fishing guide on the South Fork. Jeremy’s surprised and tantalized, but Macy isn’t having any of his alpha male posturing. She gives as good as she gets, and she knows how to throw a mean right hook.

As the two of them get tangled up in each other’s lives, both Jeremy and Macy must come to terms with winning and losing and letting love in. And Jeremy has to find the answer to his own question: Is he simply “using” Macy or could he really “use” someone like her? Find out in Use Somebody, book 3 of the Fix You series.

A Valentine Extra, Saving Evangeline

Dear Evie,

So, it’s Valentine’s Day and I know you’ll want a stupid poem, so here goes nothing.

 Candy apples are red,

Cotton candy is pink,

I’m pretty damn sure,

My poem’s gonna stink.

Yeah, I know. That sucked. (Speaking of sucking… I hope that’s my present. *hint, hint*)

Crazy Girl, I don’t know how else to express my love for you, except to say, I love you. I love the way your eyes soften like melted chocolate when I make love to you. I love your hair when it’s wild and free. I love the way you take care of that stupid mutt, Goner and me.(Damn, that was pretty good. I should’ve made that my stupid poem) I love the sound of your laughter and hope to hear more and more of it. I love that you’re terrified of heights but willing to try anything. I love that you get my sick sense of humor. But most of all,  I love the fact you fell for me when it was so damn wrong.  Evangeline Lourdes Salvatore, please be mine. For ever and ever. XOXOXO

Love, Remi

PS What the hell do those XO things mean, anyway? And I made the card, I hope you like it.

Dear Remi,

Your poem sucked. XOXO means hugs and kisses. And as for your present for later, I’m on it. *wink, wink* Just shove Goner off the bed when you get here.

I love you, Evie

PS And thank you for not saying amen after forever and ever. That creeps me out. Oh, and I know you had Peter do the fancy script. I can’t read your normal everyday handwriting. Thank him for his help. I love the valentine.

PSS You’re the best thing that ever happened to me, and this made me cry. I love you forever and ever. XOXOXOXOXOXOXO

Author Spotlight: M.V. Freeman discusses her new release, INCANDESCENT

Im honored to interview M.V. Freeman, author of INCANDESCENT. Today is your release day, how exciting! Thank you for taking the time to talk about your book, I know your schedule must be hectic. So let’s jump right in with the questions. For those that don’t know you, tell us about yourself.

I’m an art school drop-out turned nurse with a love of riveting stories filled with adventure, anti-heroes and heroines, who adores coffee, kettle-bells, and cooking.

I had the privilege of reading an ARC of INCANDESCENT and LOVED it. Would you mind giving the readers a quick blurb?

Laurie Hudson’s strange affinity for fire forced her to give up on normal years ago. Distanced from her family and with few friends, she’s managed to carve out a small but lonely niche for herself as a bartender at an upscale restaurant. The unexpected arrival of the new owner, Mikhail Petrov, a brutal but charming man, up-ends her life, exposing her to a hidden world where she is the prize everyone desires.

A formidable Tri-elemental, Mikhail Petrov commands earth, air, and water. He doesn’t give a damn what the untrained Fire Elemental Laurie wants. Her rare power is the key to his freedom, and he doesn’t hesitate to seize her for his use—an act that propels him into a war he isn’t ready to fight. The cost could mean his life and the destruction of his people.

“I’m not the good guy, Laurie. But I’m also not the bad guy. I’m simply your better choice,” Mikhail tells the reluctant Fire Elemental as he begins to train her. As their enemies close in, Laurie’s feelings toward the frustrating Tri-elemental change before she realizes—a little too late that Mikhail may not have been her best choice, after all.

81xg1C5hhdL._SL1500_This cover is beautiful and very representative of the story! Where do you get your inspiration to write these type stories?

I write Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. I think my current stories are an Urban Fantasy/Romance mix. I never do things the easy way. They come from all over; a movie, a news article, the people I see and meet. This is my first book in the Hidden Races Series, INCANDESCENT. I was inspired to write it by the movie Eastern Promises –I loved the Russian Hero in that movie.

*sigh* Mikhail Petrov. That accent, those eyes… Oops I digress, please continue, so this is a series?

Yes! The Hidden Races Series. Which surprised me, because when I first wrote this book I wanted it to be one book, but I wasn’t even half way through when I realized I had to have a series because I like intricate plots too much. This first book is also a re-release; and even though that was a great experience, I wanted the series in one place. This book has undergone extensive re-editing; which has allowed me to add more to certain scenes which, in my opinion, deepens the story.

What can we expect in the future with this series?

There will be mayhem, and romance. Each book will feature a different hero/heroine, but all of the characters will be in each book because of the over-arching plot line. I love Fantasy, Urban Fantasy—and it comes out in my story telling. In this series; I have a Humans, and the hidden races are Darks, Mages, and Elementals. Book two (will be out in 2015)—and this will be feature a Mage who is trying to regain his status and a Dark who knows no boundaries. Book three (I’m writing now)—This will have an uptight nurse, who is also a human witch, and a Dark Art thief who wants to collect her. Book four (I’m plotting)— will have two people (A Dark and a Mage) whose lives are in pieces, and they put each other back together again.

Very exciting! I definitely want more of Mikhail Petrov. He absolutely gave me the shivers yet intrigued me. Is he based on anyone you actually know?

No. If there was someone even remotely like this in my life, well then, I’m hanging with some scary people if you ask me! I created this character by observing and talking to people—I love Russian culture; and with the help of those who actually have interacted and lived in a Slavic country I was able to create a fictional character who I thought was very cool. (and I’m so glad you loved him!)

I have to confess I secretly call him Misha, do you?

I would not call Mikhail –Misha if you are not family, or a close personal friend…. or you have something you can hold over him. It’s not healthy…

*Gulps and looks over shoulder, nervously.* So if you had a dream cast for the movie, who would play Mikhail and Laurie?

Viggo Mortenson if he’s still young enough, if not, Michael Fassbender and for Laurie, Rachelle Lefevre.

Exactly who I pictured! Okay let’s have some fun, quick fire questions:

Favorite color?

Black/Red/Blue. I love these colors equally. I don’t know why—but I do.

Favorite genre of music?

All genre’s. I listen to anything from Baroque, to Metal, and Indie

Do you have a playlists for your stories?

Oh yes I do—I even choose a theme song for each book. (I put them on Spotify) INCANDESCENT has two, The New Divide by Linkin Park, and My Songs Know What you did in the Dark- Light ‘em up, by Fall Out Boy.

Coffee or tea?

Both. I love Coffee (French Roast); especially in the morning and tea (Rose tea, Lord Bergamont) in the afternoon. These are my weaknesses.

This was so much fun. Thank you for joining me today! I look forward to reading all of The Hidden Races Series.

Thanks for having me Nancee, this was fun!
