Below is one of my favorite romance scenes from F. Stone’s book, Forbidden.

Chapter 30

Buzz adjusted his speed and configured the Phoenix to climb. The mountain loomed another one hundred fifty miles in the distance. Snow in the higher elevations glistened in the sun among the jagged peaks.

“Better have a seat, Sharif. Going to get rough. Buckle up your friend, too.” Buzz turned to check on Miss MacKay. “Shit, what is she doing?”

She stood at the tail section in the aisle, wobbling with the aircraft’s movement on the wind currents. Her bare back faced the men. She appeared to be looking for something in her backpack.

Sharif lunged to stand behind her back, blocking the pilot’s view of the semi-naked woman.

“What are you doing?” he growled. “This is not permitted.”

“I spilled hot coffee on my shirt. It burned like crazy. Just give me two minutes to change into a clean shirt.” Eliza shrugged him off. “Turn around.”

“You’re indecent.” Sharif knew he should tear his eyes away, and turn around. The shape of her back, the soft shoulders, and her curves reminded him of the undulating terrain of the Sahara. The waistband of her pants rested low on her hips. Fighting his body’s traitorous desires, Sharif growled, “Get into the bathroom.”

“Too damn small.” Eliza snatched a black lace camisole from her backpack and held it against her chest. “Go back to Buzz. I’ll be properly dressed in two minutes.” The plane lurched to the right. Eliza lost her balance and placed her feet farther apart.

Sharif grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back snug against his chest. He whispered into her ear. “Eliza, when are you going to stop tormenting me?” He half-hoped she didn’t hear his confession above the roar of the twin engines.

“Do you want me to shut off who I am?”

He felt her body tense as if preparing to fight him off, then melt into his wall of muscle and bone.

The intimacy threw him into panic. In the span of one breath, he felt the old inclination to shun the pleasure, even to feel repulsed by the bliss. Allah forbids. But his drive to be honorable refused to allow the lie. He could no longer deny that Eliza, the impetuous and insane woman who had the audacity to expose his humanity, had become very dear to him.

“No, never,” he said, placing a brief kiss on the corner of her mouth. Though he met her just seven weeks ago, he knew her as if they had spent a lifetime together. He knew the cadence of her voice, the swing of her stride, and the nuances of her moods. He marveled at the light that shimmered in her hair and lived in her eyes. He knew the capricious scent of her body, and could spy on her thoughts through the tilt of her head and curve of her mouth. He found it mystifying at the depth to which he understood this woman, like no other. Wanted her, like no other.

The warmth of her body spread like a warm breeze into his. Numbed by isolation and practiced sacrifice, fragments of his passion flared out of control. Hashim Sharif moaned. He couldn’t tell where his body ended and hers began. The dim light of the aircraft cabin sighed over her shoulders. If not for the lace camisole concealing her most alluring charms, his lust would have ruled his actions.

Over the years, the words “I love you” had become mute, lost under the weight of perceived duty and disconnection with his emotions. He was Captain Sharif, the noble Muslim warrior. He was not Hashim Sharif, the good man, worthy of Eliza MacKay.

Soft and warm, her hands covered his. Sharif shivered with need – to declare to man and Allah, Eliza was his. A violent shake of the aircraft shattered his lustful intentions. Sharif straightened, and wrestled his inner cop back into control. Love was for people not running for their lives.

She buttoned up a fresh shirt, turned to face him and flipped up her hair under the police cap. “There, no harm done.”

He lifted his cap and slapped it back down. “Around my family, we’ll have to maintain physical distance. No unnecessary conversation.”

“You’re the boss.” She smiled and patted his chest. “Anything you want, it shall be done.”

For the next hour Sharif and Eliza rested, fitfully sleeping, half relieved to be away from the terror in Samarra, and yet anxious about finding a resolution to the Sharif family’s safety. Sharif bolted upright in his seat when Buzz shook him awake.

“There’s trouble in Rumi, Sharif,” Buzz hollered. “Captain Khattab and his men are setup to meet you on the tarmac.”

Romance Under Fire

Author Feather Stone / F. Stone / Judy Weir

On our cattle ranch, when an animal was in distress or injured, I was put in charge of nursing it back to health. Never mind that I was just a kid and hated the sight of blood, but I had to muster up the courage to apply home remedies. My survival rate was pretty good. It seemed like a foregone conclusion that I would progress to nursing – humans. After one year into nurses training, I bolted. Bed pans and chronic diseases pushed me in different direction; a career of dealing with drug addicts, murder, suicide, fatalities, and biker gangs. In 1983 I graduated with honors as a paramedic and worked in the City of Edmonton’s Emergency Services.

For the next twenty years, I came face to face with scenes most people would rather not think about. I loved it. Having experienced life in the most deadly and gut wrenching events, and work alongside the police service, I gained the fodder for creating intense novels.

My first novel, The Guardian’s Wildchild, was published by Omnific Publishing in 2011. The setting is on a naval ship, under the command of a surely man who is under suspicion of treason. When a battered woman is brought to his ship for execution, he has no idea that she is about to turn his disciplined life into chaos – and that she is no ordinary woman. The Guardian’s Wildchild has a rating of 4.1 at Amazon.

EXCERPT:

“Honey, this is all about you, and I’m worried. This guy is out of your league.”

“I knew it. You don’t think I’m good enough for him!” She grabs several outfits and marches to the dressing room.

I run in after her, causing a pandemonium of outraged screeching. This must be how dogs feel with those high-pitched whistles. One woman smacks me with a hanger as I run past her.

“You’re wrong, Jo. Like I told you, I think you’re much too good for him.”

Jo turns and her mouth drops open. “Get out! You can’t be in here.”

I push her into one of the dressing rooms and bolt the door behind us. She holds the clothes to her chest.

“He doesn’t deserve you.”

She swallows. “Th-Thank you. But again, I can handle this.”

Someone pounds on the door. “Sir, you need to leave,” an authoritative female voice commands.

Madge said I needed to break the rules. I’m off to a good start. Might as well finish with a bang. I grab Jo and stare into her eyes. I want to kiss some sense into her. Not that I have much sense to impart at the moment. My thoughts scramble as I gaze at her tempting mouth.

“Rafe—”

The pounding on the door intensifies. “Sir, security is on the way!”

Finally, I dig deep and find enough will power to take a step back. Or maybe I just wimp out. At this point I have no idea of the right thing to do.

“You’re incongruous,” Jo whispers breathlessly.

“Incongruous?”

She nods. “You know, bad beyond correction.”

I chuckle. “I think you mean incorrigible.” Though I feel a little incongruous as well…

Bonus Scene for Saving Evangeline

As a new author, I am humbled by the response to my first novel, Saving Evangeline. This past week I hit a personal milestone. I have 75 reviews on Amazon. To thank my readers, I’m giving you a bonus scene with our favorite bad boy angel who’s been sent to save Evangeline but has to do it disguised as a priest. So without further ado…
drivethruprayer

“I’m hot.” I have the window down because Remi’s smoking. I glance in the side mirror, disheartened. My hair looks like I styled it with an eggbeater.

“Quit nagging, Evangeline. And if you’d roll up the window, the air conditioner would work better.”

“Well quit smoking.”

“I’ll quit when you stop griping. Since I know that isn’t going to
happen, I probably need to pick up a carton when we get gas.”

“Maybe you should pray about it,” I snipe back. “Can we please stop and stretch our legs? If I don’t get out of this car for a few minutes I’m going to go to jail for murder.”

“Orange isn’t your color, Crazy Girl.”

“Well at least get back on the interstate, I’m sick of small towns, Father.

“Fine, if it’ll shut you up.”

He does a U-turn and immediately blue lights flicker behind us. Dumbass. He’s done an illegal turn in front of on an unmarked police car.

“Leave me the keys when they haul your ass to jail. You’ll probably look great in orange,” I quip with a smug smile.

“No one’s going to jail. It might help if you’d start crying.”

“What?”

“Cry,” he hisses. “You know, sob, wail, blubber or weep. You should be a pro at it by now.”

“I know what the word means, asshole.” Although I’ve cried way too many times in front of this priest, for the life of me, I can’t summon the tears. I find the entire situation hysterically funny.

He runs a finger around his collar and sweat beads his brow. Hiding my laughter in my hands, I peek through my fingers, not wanting to miss this for anything. Let’s see how the glib Father talks his way out of this one.

The officer peers in the car, and his eyebrows lift at the sight of Remi’s collar. “Uh, sorry, Father. You just did an illegal U-turn.”

“I did, didn’t I? I’m sorry. I wasn’t paying attention because I was comforting this distraught young lady.”

Lady? My shoulders shake with my repressed laughter. He pats me on the back more forcefully than I think necessary.

“There, there, Evie. Don’t worry. The officer is just doing his job.”  He hands his license through the window. I snort and hiccup trying to contain my giggles.  Reaching for the registration and proof of insurance, Remi pinches my leg, making me yelp.

“Everything all right, miss?”

Keeping my face covered, I shake my head. If he sees my face, I’ll be busted for lying. I suck at poker.

“This poor child has led a sinful life and is full of repentance. I, uh, saw the sign over there and thought we’d give it a try. My way doesn’t seem to be working, bless her heart.”

Oh no, he didn’t. Every Southerner knows the phrase bless her heart is always offered with a healthy side of sarcasm.

The officer glances behind him. “It’s a non-denominational church, not Catholic, Father. You need to go about thirty miles up the road to find your kind.”

“My kind? Would you like to discuss the theology of forgiveness, son?”

Remi’s condescending tone sends me over the edge. Real tears now streak down my face as I bite my lip to the point of pain trying to control my laughter.

“No, sir, but—”

“You’re concerned about a U-turn. I’m concerned about the direction this poor unfortunate’s soul is taking.” Remi leans out the window and stage whispers, “If we don’t get her some help now, she may very well spend all of eternity at a permanent barbeque, if you know what I mean. Do you want that on your conscience?”

I hunch over and scream with laughter.

The poor cop jumps back at least six feet. “Dear Lord above, does she need an exorcism?”

“She might, you volunteering to help?”

“No sir, I’m Baptist. Y’all go on now.”

“Thank you. I’ll say an extra novena for you.” He rolls up the window and waves as the cop drives past.

I’m laughing so hard my side hurts. “You’re going to hell.”

“Nah, I’m not leaving without you.”

He takes my hand in his and gives it a gentle squeeze. At this moment I’d follow him to hell gladly. I can’t imagine my life without him. To my surprise he pulls into the parking lot of the non-denominational church.

“What are you doing?”

He points at the sign. Drive thru prayer.

“You’re joking, right?”

“You wouldn’t want me to bear the sin of lying would you?”

“You just said that stuff to get out of a ticket.”

“Tell me something. Where will you spend eternity?”

I roll my eyes. “In the dirt, rotting. Or hell.”

He sighs and taps the steering wheel with his thumbs. “Maybe this will convince you otherwise. It appears open and no waiting. Let’s go. Besides, they offer a free carwash with every prayer, too.”

He drives up to a window that looks like a bank teller. A young man looks up from his Bible and smiles.

“Well hello, uh, Father, sir.”

“Just Remi is fine. We’re all in this together, right?”

“I guess so?” The guy looks to be my age or younger. “My name is John. What can I do for y’all? Do you have a specific prayer request?”

“Well John, you look like you have a good head on your shoulders.” Remi snickers at his own joke while poor guy’s eyes practically bug out of his head. “I’d like to order a prayer for salvation, to go.”

“A prayer for salvation to go?”

“That’s what I said. Can we get super fast delivery? She’s on the fast track to hell. Just ask her.”

I punch him in the arm.

“Ow. She’s violent, too. Did you see that? Better make it a double, John.” He grins. “I’d ask for a side of fries, but that’s what we’re trying to avoid. She thinks she’s gonna be a crispy critter.”

John leans forward, hands on the glass and looks all around us. “Am I being punked?”

An older gentleman steps into the booth. I have to wonder if John pressed some sort of emergency prayer button or something for back up.

“Punked?” Remi turns to me. “What’s that mean?” he whispers.

“He thinks you’re playing a trick on him,” I gasp between giggles.

“Father.” The gray haired man greets him. “I’m Brother Forsythe, the pastor here, can I help you?”

I laugh and motion Remi to drive off. “Just go, we need to get out of here.”

“No, we came for prayer, so prayer we’re gonna get,” Remi insists.

The minister frowns, and his white bushy brows knit together. “Sir, is this some sort of hazing prank? If it is, you need to just move along. We take the Lord very seriously here.”

“Oh I’m sure you do.” Remi nods with a smug smirk. “But trust me, Bubba; no one has a better sense of humor than The Boss.”

The younger guy smirks as the pastor gasps his outrage.

Remi leans toward the window. “I mean think about it. Look at the poor platypus and aardvark. What’s up with them?”

“Son, I think you two need to move on.”

“Let me get this straight, I’ve gone from Father, to sir, to son. Are you refusing to serve us?”

“I don’t appreciate mockery of my religion or foolishness,” the pastor huffs.

Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious, but fools are consumed by their own lips. See? We’re on the same page, Brother. Except I don’t think you’re being very gracious. We’ll leave, but I want my free carwash.”

The poor man looks ready to stroke. John grins and the drawer opens with a token, which Remi palms. He offers a quick blessing and makes the sign of the cross. By the time we pull away, John is fanning Brother Forsythe.

I finally let loose laughing. “I don’t think I’m the one going to hell.”

He grins. “Me either. Luc wouldn’t put up with your woe-is-me bullshit and he certainly doesn’t want that sanctimonious poop. Let’s get this free car wash. We earned it listening to that pompous guy. Besides, they’re fun.”

“You’re so silly.” I can’t stop grinning. I realize I’m enjoying myself. Life has certainly been less gloomy since I met the sexy priest.

A few blocks away we find Carl’s Christian Carwash: Where Cleanliness is Next to Godliness.

“Look at that!” Remi points to the colored suds on the windshield, but I’m looking at him. He stares at me, and I’m mesmerized by the flickering flames in his pupils. The air in the car sizzles with a sexual awareness that’s undeniable.

“Evangeline…” His breathing sounds harsh and the longing I feel is mirrored in his face.

“I want to consume your foolish lips, Father,” I whisper, tracing the outline of his mouth with my thumb.

He smiles and leans toward me. “I graciously accept.” My breath catches. It’s finally happening, what I’ve daydreamed about since meeting this man. His lips tentatively explore mine and then take what I freely give.

It’s the kiss to end all kisses, a toe curling, breath stealing, soul consuming kiss. I’ve wanted this and anticipated it more then a five-year-old waiting on Santa to visit. It’s even better than my dreams, a deep connection that rocks me to the center of my being. He’s my missing heart.

He sighs. I pull away as the enormity of what we’ve done crashes around us. Reality sucks. I can’t have him. “Damn you,” I whisper.

I look into his eyes and see pain mixed with desire. “Probably so.” He brushes my cheek with the back of his fingers. “But worth it.” He kisses me again, softer, gentler and whispers, “This is why you have to stick around, Crazy Girl. You’re mine for eternity, no matter what happens. Trust me.”

The car jolts and sunshine pours through the now sparkling windshield. The mood dissipates, but my happiness remains. For in this one stolen moment of happiness, I’ve found hope for the future. Just like a kid on Christmas Eve…

Cover Reveal, Interview and Giveaway from Jennifer Lane

Aced CoverI’m excited to be part of the cover reveal for Jennifer Lane’s upcoming release, Aced, the second book in The Blocked Series.

Release Date: December 2, 2015

Add it to your TBR list on Goodreads!

Here’s the Blurb:

Volleyball wonder Lucia Ramirez found her love match in Blocked despite the glaring political spotlight aimed on her family. In Aced, the second book in Jennifer Lane’s Blocked series, it could be her brother Alejandro’s turn to get lucky in love.
Medical student Alejandro’s hot Latin looks get him plenty of attention, but his deep faith and admiration for his father keep him on a righteous path, with no time for something as frivolous as love. He strives to do the right thing—study diligently, take care of his siblings, represent the family well—so why does he feel so unfulfilled?
Enter Lucia’s friend and teammate Maddie Brooks, who shines at blocking the ball and acing the serve. Too bad this graduating senior isn’t so confident about her life off the court. Her longtime boyfriend has just bailed on her, and med school applications loom large. Oh, and a nerve-wracking tryout for Team USA also approaches.
Maddie meets Alejandro when he visits Lucia at school, and she’s soon drawn to his sharp mind. Alejandro is similarly intrigued by Maddie’s talent and strength. But will personal biases and family politics smother the slow burn of their attraction? Unless Maddie can learn to believe in herself, and Alejandro can become his own man, their kindling romance hardly stands a chance.
Will either of them be bold enough to try something new? Find out in this emotion-rich story that refuses to shy away from life’s hardest questions. Because love is worth the risk.
*******

I managed to sneak a few questions in so we can get to know Jennifer better.

What inspired you to write this series?

Playing sports made college even more fun and rewarding, so I wanted to share that experience with readers. I’ve already written a book about swimming, Streamline, and naturally I turned to the other sport I played: volleyball. Intrigued by forbidden love and hate-to-love stories, I wanted to create diametrically opposed characters who somehow find common ground. In Blocked, Lucia and Dane have strong political differences. In Aced (Blocked #2), Maddie and Alejandro have racial differences.

MaddieAlejandroActorsIf Aced were cast as a movie, who would be your Dream Cast?
Gugu Mbatha-Raw would play Maddie Brooks, and Jay Hernandez would play Alejandro Ramirez in Aced.
Thank you for stopping by, Jennifer. You have been so supportive of me as a new writer and I thank you! I look forward to reading this book.
 Excerpt:

I’d only seen Alejandro on TV, but his presence seemed magnified in real life. He was Jaylon’s height but probably weighed thirty pounds less. He moved like a panther, sleek and long in a black suit “dressed down” with no tie. His short black hair shone in the arena lights, and he appeared freshly shaven. Hot damn! He sure looked more suave than any college boy I’d encountered. Was that the typical dress for medical school at Johns Hopkins? Probably not. Something told me Alex did things his own way.

As Alejandro approached, Lucia stood to hug him, shaking her head. “Hey, what’re you doing here? You didn’t tell me you were coming.”

He smiled. “Could we go somewhere to talk?”

She glanced at me. “I don’t want to leave Maddie. I dragged her here, so it’d be rude to abandon her.”

“So this is the famous Maddie.” When Alejandro reached across to shake my hand, his dark eyes burned into me. “I’ve seen you play, but it’s good to finally meet. I’ve heard great things about you.” His handshake was firm, but his hand was soft and warm, zinging a surprising thrill right through me. I realized that for at least a few moments, I hadn’t thought about Jaylon. Alejandro let go all too quickly.

His expression sobered as he looked back at Lucia. “I want to talk to you about something in private.”

She folded her arms across her chest as they both sat. “I already said no, thank you. I can’t right now.”

He frowned and squared his shoulders. Then he leaned in to Lucia’s ear and spoke to her in Spanish. She bristled next to me.

“How dare you?” she hissed.

I leaned back. What had just changed my sweet Rez into a pissy hellcat?

Saving Evangeline Released TODAY! How about an excerpt?

SE FinalToday is the day! I woke up to find a friend had posted a picture of my book on her kindle. MY BOOK. My baby! Yep. I did an awkward little dance (think Elaine from Seinfeld, this girl hasn’t got any rhythm).

Here’s a tiny excerpt from Saving Evangeline.

Remi stops short and turns around. My body slams into his and of its own accord molds into it as if made to be there. He cups my face with his hands. “Just for tonight, let’s pretend I’m not a priest and you’re not crazy. We’re just two normal human beings having a good time. Just a man and a woman at a rip-off carnival, living in the moment.” Laced with forbidden promises, his voice seduces me. I grip his biceps so hard I’m sure I’ve left imprints of my nails.

“But—”
“Don’t over-think this, Evangeline. Carpe diem. It’s the only way to live. We’re all on a fast track to death, born to die, so to speak…” He taps my nose with his index finger and smiles. “Some faster than others. Don’t rush it, just breathe and enjoy each precious moment. The good and the bad.” He leans in and whispers, “And this is definitely the good.”
I thought it only fitting to share a scene at the carnival. This journey to publishing has been a roller-coaster ride, but in the end, I’m amazed, breathless and ready to do it again!

Teaser Tuesday, Photos & Quotes for Saving Evangeline

So, I thought I’d post all of the teasers pics I’ve been sharing on social media. Things are moving along toward publication and I’m so excited the DH says I’m like a kid before Christmas! Sooooo, until release day, here you go!

SE Final

Evangeline is the town pariah. Everyone knows she’s crazy and was responsible for the death of her last boyfriend. Even her mother left her and moved cross-country. Lonely and desperate, Evie decides to end her life.

Rogue angel Remiel longs to return to earth, but there’s just one problem. He tends to invite trouble and hasn’t been allowed back since Woodstock. The Boss sends him to save Evangeline, but there’s a catch: he can’t reveal his angelic nature, and he must complete the task as Father Remiel Blackson.

Forced together on a cross-country trip, a forbidden romance ignites and love unfolds. A host of heavenly messengers tries to intervene, but Remiel and Evangeline are headed on a collision course to disaster. Will his love save her, or will they both be lost forever?
